Oates, Titus

Oates, Titus
(1649–1705)
   Conspirator.
Oates was born in Rutland, England. He was the son of a Baptist minister, but in 1673 he was ordained as an Anglican clergyman. Subsequently he converted to Roman Catholicism. While pursuing his studies in Spain, he claimed to have heard of a plot to replace the Protestant King Charles II with his brother, the Catholic James (who was later to become James II). The case became a cause célèbre. Oates was regarded as a national hero and many innocent people were harassed and persecuted (including Oliver plunket, Archbishop of Armagh). It turned out, however, that there was no evidence of such a plot and Oates was convicted of perjury in 1685. The incident did much to revive anti-Catholic feeling in England.
